Vienna & music, as we would say in the Netherlands; they are “two hands on one belly”.
That definitely sounds strange and weird in english. But it means they belong to each other. And not just the performing arts but also the making of musical instruments. So we visited a violin maker during our stay. And I am always very impressed by their craftsmanship.
I have to say that I am a little bit in love with luthiers. Especially guitars, as I am a guitarist and do tinker a little bit myself with guitar body’s, necks and strings.
But one thing that I only found in luthier shops of “older” instruments is the smell of the wood. It’s sad that I cannot convey that smell through a computer. To me it smells like a combination of a freshly shopped pinewood and cigar boxes. So if you ever have chance to smell and take a look inside a shop where they make violins or cello’s, don’t hesitate and step into the world of luthiers. It’s craftsmanship at its best & beautiful.
